From the moment I stepped off the plane, Hanoi immediately ensnared me with its unique and captivating rhythm. The city’s energy was palpable, a vibrant mix of old traditions and modern life that drew me in from the very first breath of the humid air. It was an intoxicating start to my adventure, a promise of the experiences yet to come.
Morning / Arrival
After a smooth immigration process (tip: have your eVisa printed and ready), I grabbed a SIM card from a Viettel kiosk and booked a Grab straight to my hotel in the Old Quarter. The ride was a blur of neon signs, narrow streets, and the occasional glimpse of a lakeside temple glowing in the dusk.
Afternoon / Check-In & Recharge
My hotel was tucked down a quiet alley, just far enough from the chaos to sleep soundly, but close enough to walk to Hoan Kiem Lake. I dropped my bags, took a quick shower, and headed out — because Hanoi doesn’t wait.
Evening / Hoan Kiem Lake & Old Quarter Food Tour
The lake was alive. Couples strolled hand-in-hand, kids chased bubbles, and street performers played traditional đàn bầu melodies. I joined a small food tour group and spent the next two hours tasting my way through Hanoi’s soul:

Each bite came with a story — from the French colonial influence to the resilience of post-war Hanoi.
Travel Tips for Day 1
- Airport Arrival: SIM cards are cheaper downtown, but airport kiosks are convenient for instant connectivity.
- Currency Exchange: Avoid exchanging large sums at the airport. Use gold shops near the Old Quarter for better rates.
- Getting Around: Download the Grab app before arrival. It’s reliable and cheaper than taxis.
- Jet Lag Hack: Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake to reset your body clock. The energy is contagious.
